The Gift of Quiet

We often feel the weight of the world’s brokenness—the conflicts in our churches, the cries for justice, the heartbreak of those we serve. It can feel like there’s no time to pause when the needs around us are so urgent.

But here’s the paradox: without quiet, without stillness, we cannot effectively respond to those needs. We risk burning out, losing sight of God’s calling, and leading from a place of reaction rather than discernment.

Jesus Himself modeled a different way. He often withdrew to solitary places to pray (Luke 5:16). In the wilderness, the garden, and the lonely hillsides, He embraced the eremos—the deserted place—not as an escape, but as a source of strength and clarity. If Jesus needed this rhythm of quiet, how much more do we?

When we allow ourselves to step away from the noise, we create space for transformation. Here’s what the gift of quiet can offer:

  • Clarity in Calling: In the stillness, we remember why we do what we do. When we pause to listen for God’s voice, we can discern His direction more clearly, rather than simply reacting to the demands of the moment.

  • Renewal of Spirit: Silence is not just a break; it is a place of restoration. As Sarah Clarkson observed in her reflections on quiet, cultivating stillness opens us to the wonder and presence of God. It is here that we rediscover joy, courage, and the ability to lead from abundance rather than exhaustion.

  • Deeper Trust in God: Quiet forces us to confront our own limitations. It reminds us that we are not the saviors of the world—God is. And when we surrender to that truth, we find peace that cannot be shaken by the chaos around us.

The invitation of quiet is not just an invitation to rest; it’s an invitation to trust. When we step away from the noise, we are reminded that God is God—and we are not. We are reminded that God’s presence is enough, that God’s voice can calm the storms in our hearts, and that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness.

So here’s the challenge: Will you make space for silence in your life and ministry? Will you embrace the stillness and let it transform you?

It might feel uncomfortable at first. It might even feel like nothing is happening. But as you lean into the quiet, you may find that it is in the “nothingness” where God speaks most clearly.

Think About This:

  • What keeps you from practicing quiet in your life?

  • How might embracing stillness change the way you approach your ministry?

Prayer:

God of peace, teach me to be still before You. Help me to let go of my striving and trust in Your presence. In the quiet, speak to my heart, renew my spirit, and guide me in Your way. Amen.
