The Rise of the “Nones”: Understanding the Changing Spiritual Landscape
Hosted by Homebrewed Christianity / The Nones Project

As religious affiliation declines across North America, one group continues to grow rapidly: the “nones”—people who claim no formal religious identity yet often carry deep values, spiritual curiosity, and moral commitments. This four-week online course is designed to help pastors, ministry leaders, and thoughtful Christians understand who the nones really are, why they are leaving institutional religion, and how the church might engage them with wisdom, compassion, and faithfulness.

Grounded in the landmark research of The Nones Project, the course explores four broad groups of nones—NiNOs, SBNRs, Disengageds, and Zealous Secularists—and examines how meaning, spirituality, and community are formed outside traditional church structures. Through presentations, conversations with leading scholars, and interactive Q&A sessions, participants are invited to move beyond stereotypes toward a more nuanced understanding of today’s spiritual landscape. The course is asynchronous, making it accessible for busy leaders and church groups alike, and is offered on a generous pay-what-you-can basis.
