Good Robots? Ethical and Philosophical questions surrounding AI

I'm finding myself gravitating more toward listening than reading these days, and I thought you might appreciate this podcast recommendation.

Good Robot is a compelling four-part series from Vox's Unexplainable podcast, created in partnership with their Future Perfect team. The series explores "the stories shaping the future of AI" through a thoughtful lens that balances both the promise and perils of artificial intelligence.

The series tackles some of the most pressing questions of our time:

  • Why are tech leaders and billionaires worried about AI's catastrophic potential?

  • When robots cause harm, who bears responsibility?

  • Can AI development actually help us do the most good in the world?

  • And ultimately, what can we actually do as our world becomes increasingly populated with AI systems?

What I appreciate about this series is how it moves beyond the typical hype or fear-mongering to examine the deeper ethical and philosophical questions surrounding AI. It's accessible without being superficial, and it grapples with both the transformative potential and genuine concerns that come with this technology.

We'd love to hear your thoughts—either on the podcast itself or the broader questions it raises about how we navigate this AI moment we're living through.

If you'd like to engage more deeply around these AI topics, we invite you to join us for "Becoming Ourselves with AI: A conversation about change, faith, and possibility" next week (August 13 at 1pm EDT) as a part of our Ministry Forum Lilly Funded Webinars. This thoughtful conversation will explore what AI is changing, what still matters, and how we can faithfully show up in this moment—questions that feel especially relevant after listening to Good Robot.

Becoming Ourselves with AI: A conversation about change, faith, and possibility

A thoughtful and down-to-earth conversation about AI: what it is changing, what still matters, and how we can faithfully show up in this moment. This session is not a tech tutorial. It is an invitation to pause and reflect on our relationship with a technology that is already shaping our lives, work, and faith communities.

Our guest is Curt Hammond, Service Champion at FourSimpleWords.ca and co-founder of the +AI Mindset. Passionate about the positive impact AI can have on our faith communities, he brings warmth, clarity, and a relentless curiosity to this space. Together, we will explore questions of leadership, service, and calling in the age of AI, especially through the lens of “Who are we becoming?”

Designed for faith and lay leaders, this session will create space to wrestle with new possibilities and stretch old hesitations. Come as you are, whether you are already experimenting or still deeply unsure. All are welcome
