Closing Well - Continuing Strong

Closing Well—Continuing Strong is a retirement and transition guide for pastors and their spouses. Developed through the CRCNA’s Sustaining Pastoral Excellence initiative, the guide addresses the full scope of leaving active ministry and entering retirement.

What You Will Find Inside:

The guide walks leaders through the journey leading up to retirement, encouraging intentional planning several years in advance. It includes structured reflection on one’s ministry story, health, relationships, and calling, alongside detailed financial planning tools. Worksheets help pastors calculate projected retirement expenses, identify income sources such as denominational pensions and government benefits, and determine whether additional savings are required. Housing decisions, insurance considerations, and investment risk are also addressed.

Attention is given to shaping the final season of ministry. The resource outlines practical steps for working with a church council to clarify goals, adjust responsibilities, and prepare the congregation for change. It covers farewell planning, expressing gratitude, repairing strained relationships where possible, organizing records for a successor, and establishing appropriate post-retirement boundaries with a former congregation.

The guide also addresses the personal realities of retirement itself. It explores identity after leaving formal pastoral leadership, adjusting daily rhythms, caring for physical and emotional health, and discerning meaningful uses of time in the years ahead.

The guide also includes a dedicated section for session and elders - outlining how congregations can participate responsibly in the transition process. This includes forming planning committees, conducting exit interviews, supporting the pastor and spouse, and preparing for succession.
