Season of Creation

The Season of Creation is an ecumenical celebration held annually from September 1st to October 4th. It encourages Christians worldwide to renew their relationship with the Creator and all creation through prayer, reflection, and action for environmental stewardship. This period begins with the Day of Prayer for Creation and concludes with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology. The celebration was initiated by Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I in 1989 and has since been embraced by various Christian denominations globally, including the Roman Catholic Church under Pope Francis in 2015.

Season of Creation fosters ecumenical unity among Christians by inviting 2.2 billion believers worldwide to collectively reflect on their relationship with the Creator and the natural world. Held from September 1st to October 4th, this period serves as a time for spiritual renewal and encourages participants to engage in environmental action, reinforcing the importance of stewardship for our planet. By uniting diverse Christian denominations under a shared commitment to ecological justice, the Season of Creation motivates communities to take meaningful action toward sustainability, demonstrating the power of faith-driven environmental advocacy on a global scale.
