Truth & Reconciliation Resources for 2026

Next month is September and perhaps are making plans to recognize or participate in Orange Shirt Day and The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30… I’d humbly offer a few suggestions for your reading and listening as you prepare and plan.

First, I’d like to encourage you to read, 52 Ways to Reconcile: How to Walk with Indigenous Peoples on the Path to Healing by David A. Robertson.  52 Ways to Reconcile is an essential guide for Canadians to understand how small, attainable acts toward reconciliation can make a significant difference in collective efforts to build a more reconciled country. I’d wonder if you have a ministry community that you serve or would like to do this with a couple of friends - if you might read (or re-read) the 52 Ways starting on The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and try each of the ways over the next 52 weeks as a tangible commitment to action for the year ahead.

September would also be the perfect month to host a Ministry Forum Book Walk. We have several titles by Canadian Indigenous authors including Wab Kinew and David A. Robertson. Consider ordering a book walk for your ministry context to help start important conversations about truth and reconciliation. Order soon so you get it in time!

Finally, if you’ve never listened to the CBC Podcast - Missing and Murdered: Finding Cleo… it is an absolute must. Hosted by Cree investigative journalist Connie Walker, the series follows a family searching for their sister, Cleo Nicotine Semaganis, after she and her five siblings were taken by child welfare authorities in Saskatchewan in the early 1970s and adopted into white families across North America. The siblings were part of the controversial "Adopt Indian and Métis" program, and over ten episodes, the series uncovers what happened to Cleo while shedding broader light on the Sixties Scoop and its lasting impact on Indigenous families.
