Peaceful Practices: A Guide to Healthy Communication in Conflict
Peaceful Practices: A Guide to Healthy Communication in Conflict is a group-based curriculum created by Mennonite Central Committee (MCC U.S.) for churches seeking to build a culture of peacemaking through everyday conversations. Written by Jes Stoltzfus Buller, former peace education coordinator for MCC U.S., this nine-session course gives leaders and congregations tools to navigate disagreement while rooted in the teachings of Jesus.
Conflict is not treated as something to avoid but as a regular part of human relationships that requires intentional, skillful response. The curriculum combines biblical reflection with conflict transformation practices, encouraging participants to engage each other with curiosity, empathy, and authenticity. Each session includes a “peaceful practice,” a core principle like dignity or dialogue, alongside Scripture readings, group activities, reflection questions, and application exercises. Topics include understanding power dynamics, listening well, honoring diverse voices, and building emotional safety.
The course is designed for use in adult Sunday school settings, small groups, or leadership cohorts. It requires no specialized training and includes clear facilitation notes for both in-person and online use. Print copies can be ordered at a low suggested donation, and groups that go through the curriculum receive complimentary materials like bookmarks and a thermos for the facilitator. A Spanish version, Prácticas pacíficas, is also available.
